Thread Form and Wedge Connection

Thread-forms began with the simplest geometries, restricted by designing tools, machining tool manufacturing capability and machine limitations. Through the years, thread-forms have evolved in shape and function, most recently with a “wedge” shape, intended to “lock” the threads together. This “wedge” technology has now been improved beyond the traditional simple shapes into a “multi-faceted” shape of which TorqueLock Corporation holds numerous current patents. The angled “facets” can be changed according to the intended loads to be introduced to the particular connection. Numerous variations of the faceted thread form can be adjusted to improve certain capabilities where required and new, higher capability thread-forms and seals are currently under analysis at TorqueLock.

Advantages for having a wedge connection include:
  • Helps reduce chance of down-hole “back-off”.
  • Helps reduce chance of down-hole “helical advancement”, preventing over-torque or failure, even during string rotation.
  • Affords adjustable and predictable torque values.
  • Increases the connection efficiencies, including higher torque and increased bending capabilities
